Room by Emma Donoghue
Let me begin by warning that this book is not for the faint of heart. Room follows the story of a woman who is kidnapped and abused for years. Eventually, she gives birth to a little boy named Jack and it is his perspective through which we see this story unfold. Donoghue expertly portrays the difficulties of raising a child with absolutely no knowledge of the world outside his four walls and a mother’s constant battle to be present in her child’s life despite the horrors she faces daily. Beautifully written, this book explores the devotion between mother and child while delving into the psychological horrors of life in one room.
