To the Book Reading Commuters

I like the book reading commuters

who wedge themselves between passengers

or precariously surf a moving train car

with a book in hand.

Turning a moment of travel,

transition,

of movement from one place to another,

into a point of punctuation.

In which they grasp new knowledge,

enter a new world,

drown in the words on the page,

waiting for the moment in which those words

change the way they see everything.

Because whether they intend to or not

they are turning a public place

into a private display of interest,

character,

and perhaps,

a turning point in their lives.
